The Gold Buffalos

The Gold Buffalo Coin is indeed the most famous and sought-after US Gold coin available on the market. It’s the first legal tender coin made of 24 karats 99.99% fine gold minted by the United States Mint. The Gold Buffalos were released to compete with several other .9999 pure gold coins, like the Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, because investors started to focus on foreign gold coins of the highest purity. Since all the previous minted U.S. gold coins were made of 91.67% gold with copper and silver, the collectors switched their attention to foreign .9999 gold coins, so when the Gold Buffalos were issued in 2006, U.S. Gold Coins regained their popularity.

The purity of this outstanding coin is backed by the US Mint and US Government and is available in four size options of 1 oz., ½ oz., ¼ oz. and 1/10 oz. You can also find Certified Gold Buffalos on the precious metals market, which are graded by well-known international grading companies. The Gold Buffalo Coin price for the certified version is usually higher because they carry larger premiums due to their rarity and high quality. Each Gold Buffalo coin is sold in special sealed sheets either individually or in larger quantities of 20 coins, accompanied by a Certificate of Authority. Gold Buffalos can be purchased and applied to Individual Retirement Accounts, and are considered to be an affordable way to hedge your retirement savings against inflation.

The Design of Gold Buffalos

The famous Buffalo Nickel design created by the remarkable American sculptor James Earl Fraser in 1913 inspired the look for the Gold Buffalos. Fraser was a student of the notorious creator of Gold Eagles, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He showcased his artistry for the Gold Buffalo coin design by depicting the native natural image of the West heritage. On the obverse side of the coin is depicted the profile of a Native American. The image has a mixture of features of three tribe chiefs from different Indian American tribes who posed for Fraser: Two Moons (Cheyenne), Big Tree (Seneca) and Iron Tail (Lakota). The Native American’s face is represented very thoroughly detailed, just like his braided hair and feathers. Besides the profile, the obverse side of the coin also contains the “F” for Fraser inscriptions and the word “Liberty” along with the mintage year mark.

On the reverse side of the coin is represented the impressive symbol of the American West, the famous American Bison also known as Buffalo. Its image was inspired by the famous bison that lived in the 1910s in the Central Park Zoo from New York City. The Black Diamond bison of about 1,550 pounds was pretty tricky to be caught for a profile, so Fraser had to ask somebody else to distract its attention to obtain the best picture. On the reverse side of the Gold Buffalo is also depicted the weight and purity mark, along with the following inscriptions: “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust” and “United States of America”.
