Last year, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the program’s inauguration, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles for the first time in US Mint history. While the reverse designs received a makeover, the obverse designs on both coins have remained unchanged. 

The obverse for the Silver American Eagle still highlights the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph Weinman. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun while cradling oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She reaches out her right arm to the distant horizon with the American flag loosely draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso depicts a majestic bald eagle swooping down for a landing while tightly gripping an oak branch in its sharp talons.
