2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the gold and silver American Eagle coin program. According to law, the US Mint can only make changes to currency within a set amount of time. If they make a mistake, then they can only reprint the coin once within 25 years before they must wait until they can legally change the design once again. Therefore, this new design was meticulously created with special security features within the design. This new design for both the Gold and Silver Eagles features realistic images of the American Bald Eagle. For all the new Silver Eagles, including this US Mint proof Silver Eagle, an American Bald Eagle is in mid-flight.

The obverse of this Proof Silver Eagle continues to feature Adolph A Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” image. This illustration was first used for the silver half-dollar (1916-1947) and was updated for the Silver Eagle coin program. Lady Liberty with a Phrygian cap walks towards the rising sun while carrying oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She reaches her right arm out towards the horizon as the American flag gently billows around her shoulders.

The new reverse design of the Silver Eagle proof coin displays a bald eagle carrying an oak branch as it flies, perhaps to build a new nest! Inscriptions including the country, weight, purity, denomination, West Point mintmark, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum” border the eagle.
