In 2015, the US Mint released its first ever $100 Gold Coin with the 2015 W 1 oz American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin. This issue featured a modern interpretation of Saint Gaudens’ design. In 2017, the obverse showcased an African-American woman depicted as Lady Liberty. Then, in 2019, a modern bust of Lady Liberty with 13 rays of light emanating from her headdress, symbolizing the free and creative spirit of America’s people.

The obverse of the 2021 release presents a bucking American Mustang horse, throwing off a western style saddle. This illustration evokes the idea of America “throwing off the yoke” of British rule and asserting its freedom during the American Revolution. This design is a notable departure from the traditional imagery that personifies liberty as “Lady Liberty.” 

The reverse showcases a close-up view of an open-beaked fierce bald eagle, boldly staring down the viewer with a determined gaze.
