In 2020, the US Mint pushed through the world health crisis, prioritizing workers’ safety while trying to maintain steady production into 2021. Struggling with a dwindling silver supply and limited resources at its facilities, the Mint was forced to delay the release of silver coins — including the 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. Because of the constant demand for US silver bullion, the Philadelphia branch stepped in and produced these 2021 Silver Eagle coins. Consequently, these coins are referred to as “Emergency Issues”. Additionally, each label features a special 35th Anniversary design of an eagle’s silhouette in front of the number 35. These 2021 (P) Silver Eagles would make a lovely addition to any growing collection, as they are among the final graded editions to carry the original reverse design!
The original 1916 Adolph A. Weinman “Walking Liberty” design is displayed on the coin’s obverse. Lady Liberty marches to the coin’s left, her right arm outstretched towards the rising sun with the American flag billowing in the background behind her. She also carries a bundle of olive and oak branches in her left arm.
The coin’s reverse showcases John Mercanti’s original Eagle design for the final time: the United States national coat of arms. This image presents a bald eagle with outstretched wings clutching a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The eagle grasps a banner in its beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and bears a shield on its chest that displays the US flag. The 13 stars above the eagle’s head symbolize the original colonies.
