This British sovereign gold coin continues the 200 year legacy of the program. Interestingly, the Gold Double Sovereign coin technically dates back to 1485 when larger Gold Sovereign coins were minted. These were possibly used only as presentation issues in the piedfort style since these early pieces were never released for circulation. However, the Double Sovereigns were first minted in 1820, as designed by Benedetto Pistrucci under King George III’s reign. Again, this never entered circulation, and this was considered a pattern coin since it served as a precursor to the modern £2 coin. Last year the British Royal Mint issued a 2020 edition of this British sovereign gold coin to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this coin’s strike. The mint continues to honor the legacy by following up with this 2021 issue.
The obverse of this Gold Sovereign showcases the royal bust of Queen Elizabeth II adorned with her regal crown. Designed by Jody Clark, this portrait is the fifth version of Queen Elizabeth’s image on the British currency.
The reverse of this British sovereign gold coin resurrects the illustration created by Italian coin engraver Benedetto Pistrucci in 1820. This is the traditional design of legendary St. George on horseback heroically slaying an evil dragon. According to the story, Saint George battled the dragon to save the life of the princess. She was selected as the next sacrifice to appease the evil, hungry dragon, but she was rescued by the Saint.
