The British Royal Queen’s Beasts Coins debuted in 2016, the same year Queen Elizabeth II became the world’s longest-reigning monarch, in her honor. Every coin from the series, in silver, fractional gold, gold, and platinum, contains one of the ten heraldic animals that stood guard over her coronation in 1953. This particular beast is the White Lion of Mortimer in which a lion clutches a shield with a sun on it in its right paw. This sun is made up of the White Rose of York, which makes it different from the Lion of England Coin. In contrast, the White Lion is usually depicted as tame with blue claws, tongue, and most importantly, without a crown. The Yorkist shield is actually an amalgamation of the emblems once used by Edward IV and Richard III. The White Lion of Mortimer is a significant Coat of Arms also because Her Majesty’s father, George VI, used it.

The obverse of the coin continues to show the classic Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth wearing the royal George IV State Diadem and matching diamond earrings. She is surrounded by inscriptions noting her name, the coin’s face value, and a Latin phrase.

The reverse bears the White Lion of Mortimer on his hind legs, clutching a shield emblazoned with the sun as the White Rose of York. He raises his left claw and snarls to the right of the coin.
