Canada is home to over 600 types of plants and animals that are at risk of becoming extinct. Therefore, the Royal Canadian Mint started the Endangered Species coin program in 2020 with the Black-Footed Ferret 6-coin set. The exclusive dollar coin in each of the sets from this collection serves the purpose of raising awareness about a specific species that is endangered in Canada. This year, for 2021, the mint showcases the Blanding’s Turtle. This turtle is also known as the “smiling” turtle, which lives to about 80 years of age. This creature matures late and can reproduce only between the ages of 14-25, so even a slight uptick in adult mortality can greatly tip the balance of this species' survival. Luckily, programs created by the Toronto Zoo and its partners are helping to return this turtle’s population to a healthy level. 

This special Canadian dollar coin is sold exclusively with this coin set, and the reverse features the Blanding’s turtle looking up as it walks on a log. It is surrounded by inscriptions including “Canada Dollar”, and “2021”. The obverse of this Canadian Mint coin carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Susanna Blunt. Inscriptions include “Elizabeth II”,  and “D.G. Regina”, or “Queen by the Grace of God”.
