Bluenose and her legacy were born in 1921 on a simple drafting table. This year is the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Bluenose, formally known as “The Queen of the North Atlantic.” This ship was a Grand Banks fishing and racing gaff rig schooner whose master engineering helped accomplished incredible feats in races, fishing, and more. This Canadian dollar coin honors both the historic ship and the naval architect who created its design, William J. Roué. The Bluenose was such a remarkable ship that it became Nova Scotia’s provincial mascot, and later its fame grew to become a significant Canadian icon entirely. This ship was employed as a working vessel until she was unfortunately wrecked in 1946. Please note, there are two Bluenose coins in the set: the proof silver dollar and the double-dated 10 cent coin.

The obverse of the Canadian commemorative dollar coin displays the portrait of the monarch in power in 1921, former King George V. This was the same image struck into Canadian coins in 1921: the monarch looks to the left of the coin while wearing his royal crown and dress. He is highlighted in gold plating, and so is the rim. The portrait of King George V from 1937 also appears on the 10-cent coin.

The reverse image shows the Queen of the North Atlantic partially over the Atlantic ocean. Half the boat is covered by a blueprint design in the middle of being drawn by a pair of hands. These hands represent the naval architect, Roué. His signature also appears between the hands designing the ship, and his pen is highlighted in gold, as is half the ship and the masts. The ship is also featured on the reverse of the 10 cent coin.
