Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis), the larger and wild relatives of domesticated sheep, mainly dwell in the snowfields of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and throughout the southwestern United States. Charging up to speeds of 40 mph, the males fight for dominance by crashing their horns into one another using up to 800 kg of force! The Kwakiutl people, self-named Kwakwaka’wakw, inhabit much of the same lands as the Bighorn Sheep. For centuries the Kwakiutl have used this mighty animal’s meat and wool for sustenance and clothing. Now, acclaimed Kwakiutl artist Richard Hunt honors this sturdy and strong sheep with this striking coin design.
For this innovative coin design, Richard Hunt created a gorgeous illustration in the distinct style of Northwest Coast Art. This refers to art created primarily by artists from First Nations and Native American tribes of the Northwest Coast of North America. This art style depends heavily on the use of the formline element, which incorporates continuous, flowing, curvilinear lines that turn, swell and diminish in a prescribed manner. This style has been used by the indigenous peoples who ink the past and the present through the medium of art. Additionally, an alternating mix of captivating color and flashy finishes further enhances its dynamic design.
The obverse displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by inscriptions.
The reverse features a stunning formline design of four Bighorn Rams in four quadrants of the coin. Two of the rams are colorized and depicted in front of red and blue backgrounds, while the other two are engraved in gold. A black and gold sun, also illustrated in the Northwest Coast Art style, appears in the coin’s center. A circle of small green and white triangles surrounds the border.
