This new coin series from the Royal Australian Mint was inspired by Australia’s magnificent Coat of Arms, which features a kangaroo and an emu holding up a shield. The shield depicts symbols of Australia’s six states: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. The coin itself does not bear these meaningful emblems. However, it does incorporate beautiful symbolism to celebrate Australia’s optimism and forward-thinking tendencies, as neither the kangaroo nor emu are able to move backward.

The obverse features an emu standing proudly and protectively over its unhatched eggs. This image, along with the backdrop of wattle that has not yet bloomed, is meant to signify a future full of potential. The emu faces towards the coin’s right, where the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears. A seven-pointed star is prominently displayed at the top of the coin. Six points represent Australia’s six states, while the seventh represents Australia’s territories.

The reverse shows a noble kangaroo standing tall with its joey inside its pouch. Each of the states’ and territories’ floral emblems join together to make up the wall of thriving vegetation in the background.
