The gorgeous Giants of the Galapagos series began in early 2020 with the release of the Giant Seahorse coin, which is now completely sold out! Happy with its monumental success, PAMP Suisse released the Whale Shark coin to eager collectors in February 2021. Now, the Giant Tortoise coin will follow in the Seahorse and Shark’s footsteps, appearing on a coin of its very own!

Today, Giant Tortoises only inhabit two remote Island chains: The Galapagos Islands and the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in Seychelles. The Galápagos tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) is the largest living tortoise species, can weigh up to 550 pounds, and can live over 100 years in the wild — one of the longest lifespans of any living vertebrates. These cold-blooded creatures enjoy 1-2 hours of sunbathing to warm their shells before foraging for food for 8-9 hours. These enormous herbivores feed on berries, leaves, lichens, cacti, melons, and milkweed. Additionally, young tortoises eat up almost 17% of their body weight per day to keep up with their growing needs. In order to promote a “larger-than-life” effect for the viewer and honor this incredible island giant’s impressive size, PAMP Suisse creatively extended the coin’s outline past the normal circumference; thus making this coin truly stand out in any portfolio.

The obverse displays the right-facing bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The queen wears her royal crown and elegant jewelry. Inscriptions surround her bust, with an individualized serial number at the bottom.

The reverse features the great Galapagos Tortoise, confidently striding through its habitat. Inscriptions appear above its shell and below its body.
