The Chinese Gold Panda series was first issued in 1982 by the People’s Bank of China. It was initially available in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz sizes, with the 5 oz, 12 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes being added later. In 2016, the People’s Bank of China began measuring the weight of the gold panda series in grams instead of ounces, releasing 1, 3, 8, 15, and 30 gram versions. Proof editions are struck in 1 kilo, 150 grams, 100 grams, and 50 grams. Collectors greatly appreciate this panda series for its diverse range of sizes, but they also look forward to the annually-updated reverse design as well!

The obverse of the coin shows the Temple of Heaven, an imperial complex of religious buildings found in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The year of mintage is inscribed along the rim, alongside the Chinese Characters for “People’s Republic of China.”

The reverse for the 2021 Gold Panda features a mother panda carefully observing her offspring as it climbs a tree. The coin’s denomination is inscribed above the mother’s head while the purity and weight are inscribed along the rim.
