Thirty-five years ago, the first Silver American Eagle was minted in 1986 at the San Francisco mint. This year, the John Mercanti Reverse Design takes its final bow at that very same mint, as the 2021-S Silver Eagle will feature a brand new design on the iconic American coin. The 2021 Gold American Eagle will showcase a new design as well after August 2021, ushering in a new era for American coinage. 

The obverse design, which will remain the same moving forward, displays Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty. Lady Liberty strides towards the sun while cradling branches in her left arm. The words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” are etched around the rim, along with the year of mintage on the bottom.

The reverse design, designed by John Mercanti for the very first silver eagle in 1986, displays a heraldic Eagle bearing a shield below thirteen stars.
