This year marks the 35th anniversary of the first Silver American Eagle release in 1986, originally manufactured at the San Francisco mint. Now, in 2020, the John Mercanti Reverse Design makes its final debut at that very same mint, as the 2021-S Silver Eagle will feature a brand new design on the iconic American coin. After August 2021, the Gold American Eagle will showcase a new design as well, ushering in a new era for American coinage. 

The obverse design, which will stay the same for future releases, displays Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. Lady Liberty strides towards the sun while cradling branches of laurel and oak in her left arm. The words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” are etched around the rim, along with the year of mintage on the bottom.

The reverse design, designed by John Mercanti for the very first silver eagle in 1986, displays a heraldic Eagle bearing a shield below thirteen stars, which represent the original 13 colonies.
