This year the US Mint celebrates the 35th anniversary of the very first Silver American Eagle release in 1986. Specifically, the Silver Eagle was originally produced at the San Francisco branch of the United States Mint. Now, the John Mercanti Reverse Design makes its final debut in 2020 at that very same mint, as the 2021-S Silver Eagle will feature a completely new design on the popular American coin. In addition, the Gold American Eagle will show off a new design as well after August 2021, initiating a new era for American coin production.
The obverse design, which will remain unchanged for future issues, displays Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty. Lady Liberty walks towards the sun while cradling branches of laurel and oak in her left arm. The words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” are etched around the rim, along with the year of mintage on the bottom.
The reverse design, designed by John Mercanti in 1986 for the very first silver eagle, features a heraldic Eagle bearing a shield below thirteen stars, which represent the original 13 colonies.
