Fantasia, the beloved Disney animated film, was released in 1940 by Walt Disney Productions. Eight animated sections bring to life pieces of classical music mostly performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. In the segment featuring Italian composer Amilcare Ponchielli’s ballet “Dance of the Hours,” the piece is split into four sections, which include Morning, Afternoon, Evening, and Night. Each section showcases different animals dancing, culminating in a crescendo where all of the animals form an exciting ensemble for an unforgettable finale. The duet between Hyacinth Hippo (from the “Afternoon” portion) and Ben Ali Gator (“Evening”) is particularly memorable and is featured on this coin’s reverse.

The obverse displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions include the Queen’s name, the denomination, the country of issue, and the year of mintage. 

The reverse of the coin depicts an excerpt from the climactic scene in “Dance of the Hours”. Hyacinth Hippo teases Ben Ali Alligator as she runs from his advances. Hyacinth wears a light pink tutu and Ben Ali wears his signature red cape and feathered cap. Inscriptions on the reverse include the coin’s weight, purity, and Disney copyright.
