At the end of the 1800s in Springfield, MA, basketball was born. To honor this legacy, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was established in this same town in 1959. The Hall of Fame is an independent, nonprofit organization that began with the mission to spread accessibility and honor the sport around the world. This includes both professional and amateur teams, domestically and internationally. Their best-known event is the annual Enshrinement Ceremony that celebrates the elite basketball players and notable supporters. Justin Kunz from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) captured the unifying essence of the sport by featuring three athletes from different backgrounds. These three players all reach for the basketball in the air over their heads. This image is paired with the background and border that make up a basketball hoop’s rim and net, possibly to suggest the players are about to score. 

The reverse of the coin was designed by AIP artist Donna Weaver. This side highlights the basketball itself as it is about to fall through the hoop. Inscriptions on the coin note the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
