Detailed Information:

A great art lover and a physician from Boston, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow was impressed by the incused Egyptian art work at the Boston Museum of Fine and he had aroused the interest of President Theodore Roosevelt, a close friend, to adapt this technique for the U.S. coinage.

With Roosevelt’s approval, he engaged a famous sculptor from Boston, Bela Lyon Pratt to make coin models having incused designs. Pratt developed design on the obverse of a leftward facing portrait of realistic-looking male Native American with a detailed headdress and on the reverse had an incused design of a majestic looking bald eagle perched on a bunch of arrow and holding an olive branch in its talons to symbolize preparedness and peace.

These coins entered circulation almost at the end of 1908. From 1839, the Half Eagle, which featured Lady Liberty wearing a coronet in her hair, had not seen much change in its design except adding the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” In almost 70 years now, for the first time there was a fundamental change in the device of the coin, which instead of Lady Liberty featured a male Native American on the obverse, and the unusual sunken relief of the design all added to public perturbation, which lead people to dislike this new coin.

Among them, the loudest critic was a noted numismatist from Philadelphia, Samuel Chapman, who left no stone unturned to derail the new coin. He had a list of mistakes to pinpoint in his letter to President Theodore Roosevelt. He felt that the portrait of the Native American was emaciated, he felt the coin could be easily counterfeited on a blank metal, he also felt that the coin could not stock well and that the sunken relief could accrue dirt and harbor germs that could lead to health problems among people. None of this could move the unshakable faith of Theodore Roosevelt in the coin and he gave a befitting reply back to Chapman.

The coins continued to be minted from 1908 to 1916 where they enjoyed great usage and success proving all the critics wrong. Then the minting of these coins were stopped for a whopping 13 years. One last time, the coins were minted in 1929, before they were completely stopped.

In 1909, these coins were minted in four different US mints; Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco and bear the mint marks of the Mint they were minted at. There are only 24 pieces by date and mint mark and this is the second shortest coin series in the US coin history, first being the Quarter Eagle.

These Gold Eagle Indian Head coins are famous for their age, rarity, historical significance, unique incused design and artistic value. They have a high demand in market by investors and collectors alike.
