Ghengis Khan, the founder and first Emperor of the Mongol Empire, established The Karakorum in 1220 as his headquarters and the base for his invasion of China. Ghengis Khan’s son and successor, Ögödei, subsequently fortified the city with surrounding walls and also built an impressive palace. An important stop on the Silk Road, this Mongolian Capital city was a hub of trade and important commerce. Known as a center for metalworking, The Karakorum also boasted many smelting furnaces and workshops that specialized in gold, copper, bronze, and ironwork. Evidence of ceramic production and importation of pottery were found by archeologists as well. After a significant drought, The Karakorum was largely abandoned in 1267 and was subsequently destroyed by Ming dynasty troops in 1380.
The obverse of this coin showcases the state emblem of the Mongolian People's Republic above the coin’s denomination of 5000 Togrog. Other inscriptions include “MONGOLIA” and “2 OZ .999 SILVER”. A scene depicting Mongolians gathering around an ornate fountain, with the red glass insert in the center, is also etched on the obverse.
The reverse captures the distinct architecture from The Karakorum, along with a colorized Tiffany glass insert located in the entryway of the beautifully rendered building. Inscriptions include “CITY OF KARAKORUM”, and “1220 | 2020”.
