Since 1986, the American Eagles have been in production and for sale to the American public and beyond. The first two releases were the Gold and Silver Eagles. Later, the Platinum Eagles were introduced in 1997. However, from 1997 until 2008, Platinum American Eagles were minted in fractional denominations. The US Mint sadly discontinued the production of Platinum Eagle fractional weights that year, much to collectors’ dismay. Although the Platinum Eagles were minted in multiple sizes, today the Platinum and Silver Eagles are currently only minted in the 1 oz version. Fortunately, for those seeking to purchase fractional American Eagles, Gold American Eagles are currently minted in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz denominations. Gold Eagles and Silver were first minted in 1986, with Platinum Eagles following in 1997 as the newest of the Eagles. 

The well-known John Mercanti image of Lady Liberty’s head and crown is prominently featured on the obverse of the Platinum Eagle coin. Lady Liberty is shown donning her recognizable pointed crown. The American artist Thomas D. Rogers created the design showcased on the reverse of the Platinum Eagle coin. His depiction exhibits a soaring American Eagle with wings open wide, high above the ground. The shining sun rises in the background.
