The first silver panda was produced in 1983 in proof condition, from .900 pure silver and had a limit issue of 10,000 coins. In 1986, no coins have been minted. Starting with 1987, Chinese Silver Pandas are continuously issued each year, each time depicting a new reverse design displaying the image of the popular panda bear. Only the 2001 and 2002 coin editions featured the same reverse design.

In 2017, the mint produced 10,000,000 Chinese Silver Panda coins.
