Since their first release in 1986, American Silver Eagles quickly became popular among investors and collectors all over the world due to the US mint’s decision to revive the most powerful, majestic and graceful coin design - the Walking Liberty used for the Half Dollars’ obverse from 1916 to 1947. Thus, on the obverse side of the coin is showcased the image of Lady Liberty while on the reverse side of the coins is depicted the heraldic eagle. Only in 2009, no proof eagles have been produced due to an unprecedented increase in the demand for silver bullion eagles, which the mint is obliged to supply in any amounts. The image of Lady Liberty is surrounded by the engravings “Liberty”, “2016” and “In God We Trust.”
- Reverse: Showcases a majestic picture of the heraldic eagle. Courtesy of John M. Mercanti, the former chief engraver of the US Mint. The image features a majestic eagle with a shield, holding a banner in its beak, on which the words “E Pluribus Unum” are engraved. In its left talon, the eagle holds arrows and in its right talon - an olive branch - symbolizing the readiness to defend America along with the desire for peace. Above the eagle’s figure are engraved thirteen stars which honor the thirteen original colonies. The coin’s rim is encircled by the “United States of America” inscription and the coin’s face value, purity and weight marks.
