Detailed Information:
After the enactment of the Gold Bullion Act of 1985, the American Gold Eagles were released in 1986. These are the official gold bullions to have achieved the legal tender status issued by the Government of United States of America. These US bullion gold coins come in four different sizes of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz with a face value of $50, $25, $10, and $5 respectively.
Per law the gold for these bullion coins is obtained only from the mines of United States of America and the content of the coin must be 22 karat gold with a small amount of silver and copper alloy to make the coins strong and durable and damage resistant.
Both proof version and brilliant uncirculated version of these bullion coins are made available by the US Mint.
The obverse of the coin features a full length image of Lady Liberty, a design by Augustus Saint Gaudens which was originally designed for the $20 Double Eagle in 1907. Liberty is seen striding forward holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand and her hair flowing beautifully against the wind. On the background is the US Capitol building and the rising sun. A “W” Mint mark near one of the rays denotes that the coin was minted at the West Point Mint, NY.
The reverse features a majestic bald male eagle holding an olive branch in its talons flying over a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings. This is a design by sculptor Miley Busiek and was designed in 1986.
2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of these coins. The American Gold Eagles have high value retention. Their designs add to the numismatic value of these coins. Any investment portfolio would be incomplete without the addition of these coins to it.
