Julia Grant served as the nation's eighteenth First Lady during her husband Ulysses S. Grant's two terms as President from 1869 and 1877. Although known as a staunch defender of women's rights, Julia Grant did not publicly support women's suffrage. However, she notably refused to sign an anti-suffrage petition. Additionally, Julia Grant was the first First Lady to write a memoir, but it was not published until 75 years after her death.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the bust of Julia Grant underneath her name. Inscriptions below her portrait include "18th 1869-1877" which denote her position as 18th First Lady and the years during which she served. "In God We Trust" and "Liberty" are also shown on the obverse, along with the year of mintage and mintmark.
The reverse of the First Spouse Gold coin displays a young Julia Dent (her maiden name) horseback riding with Ulysses S. Grant at her family’s plantation in White Haven.
