The original design of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was presented to President Theodore Roosevelt in December 1906. At Roosevelt's direction, the mint produced experimental versions to match the artist's vision. Despite personal tensions between Mint Engraver Charles Barber and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Barber respected the sculptor's talent and worked diligently to refine the high-relief design, with assistance from Henri Weil.

Experimental coins were created in two diameters 32mm and 27mm to test how many blows were needed to strike the high-relief design. Smaller-diameter coins allowed the press to concentrate more force, resulting in a thick, compact coin that contained the same gold content as a standard $20 Double Eagle. These trials helped pave the way for the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle, a masterpiece of numismatic artistry.
