$20 Gold Double Eagle Liberty Head Type I - Almost Uncirculated AU (Random Year, 1850-1866)

Bullion Exchanges presents the $20 Gold Double Eagle Liberty Head Type I, a historic U.S. gold coin struck from .900 fine gold and issued between 1850 and 1866. This Almost Uncirculated (AU) condition coin retains much of its original detail, displaying only slight signs of circulation. As one of the earliest $20 Gold Double Eagles, this Type I design is a remarkable piece of American numismatic history, offering both collectors and investors a tangible link to the nation’s rich gold heritage.

The $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle was first introduced in 1850, following the California Gold Rush, which significantly increased the nation's gold supply. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin features Lady Liberty’s left-facing portrait on the obverse, encircled by 13 stars representing the original U.S. colonies. The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield, a motif inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. The Type I series, minted until 1866, predates the addition of the “IN GOD WE TRUST” motto, making it distinct from later designs.
