The 1934 Sun Yat-Sen' Junk Dollar is a portable biography that symbolizes the life of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. As a well-known political giant in the world, Dr. Sun is depicted on the obverse of this dollar. He spent much of his time traveling while establishing anti-Ching Dynasty organizations and leading in revolutionary activities. Dr. Sun has had numerous biographies written about him and in six different languages. The ocean and junk (ship) without birds and rising sun illustrated on the reverse of this coin were a large part of Dr. Sun's life as he traveled often in his lifetime, spending time on the ocean and living overseas accomplishing his goals.  

Following the Northern Expedition (1926 to 1927), the Chinese government decided to replace Yuan Shih-kai Dollars with a new coin portraying Dr. Sun. The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Commemorative Coins were issued in the early years of the Republic of China, 1933 and 1934. It was later nickname "Junk Dollar". This design of the new national coin was not determined until 1933, after the Ministry of Finance publicized state currency regulations of the Republic of China. It was then minted by the Shanghai Mint. 

The Junk Dollar became quite popular and replaced the Yuan's Head, the Dragon Dollar, other foreign silver coins, as well as other Dr. Sun commemorative coins. Carving an extremely important niche in the modern history of Chinese coinage, the Junk Dollar is more than just a coin. Its design of the sailing ships on the sea was innovative in the history of Chinese coinage. Besides being a coin of historical proportion about Dr. Sun Yat-Sen', it also reveals the experience of the Chinese people in modern times; the hopes of China, and the changes in China.
