The Federal Reserve began in 1913 under Congress’ authorization. This creation was meant to help monitor and bolster the US economy against financial crises. The Federal Reserve Bank Notes were issued between 1915-1934, and they served as legal tender in the US. Their early products included US notes, silver certificates, gold certificates, National Bank Notes, and Federal Reserve Notes. Federal Reserve Bank Notes, however, are divergent from other notes because they were backed only by one of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks instead of all banks indiscriminately. Federal Reserve banknotes are no longer issued. Today’s equivalent is the Federal Reserve Notes, in production since 1971. This 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Currency Note is associated with Richmond, VA.
The obverse design of this currency note displays the portrait of George Washington on the left side. This note also features a blue treasury stamp and indicates it is redeemable at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, VA.
The reverse design was printed in stunning green. A proud eagle is in flight on the reverse, and it carries an American flag in its talons. This image signifies America’s defensive position in World War I.
