The National Bank of Baltimore in Maryland opened in 1865 but halted its production of currency in 1930. This means the bank had been printing for only 66 years before it suspended production. However, during its time, the bank issued about 26 different types and denominations of money. For this particular Baltimore Currency Note, only 19,475 sheets of the original $5 banknotes were manufactured. This bank was highly successful because for a bank to issue more than 10,000 sheets signals they had a lot of business. However, the Baltimore currency notes are still considered rare based on its condition. Every note has a special vignette that aligns with the state seal. Because there were many states making banknotes, people collected banknotes by the state seal.
The obverse design features a portrait of William McKinley, the 25th President of the US.
The reverse showcases a specialized vignette thematically aligned with Maryland. It shows the story of the original settlers journeying to the US.
