Before the start of the US, Continental Currency was authorized for use on May 10, 1775. This issuance marked the beginning of paper currency issued at the federal level, and this was the highest denomination note at the time. Additionally, this Continental Currency helped fund the American Revolution beginning in 1775. These notes ultimately became a failure, however, due to runaway inflation. The notes did not bear interest and were issued as a promise to the owner to fulfill the paper currency alongside the colonial paper issued by individual colonies. The Continental Currency failure temporarily halted the transition to paper currency in the US until the start of the Civil War in 1861.

The obverse of this Continental Currency note displays a seal and a promise to fulfill a receipt of thirty Spanish-milled dollars or in gold or silver. The note also bears the signatures in red and brown ink. The seal includes a wreath on a tomb and the words “Si Recte Facies”, a phrase that translates to “If you act righteously.”

The reverse showcases an intricate border with the face value, location of printing, and dual vignette with Latin mottos. The left side vignette shows a field with a strong-blowing wind, and the right side has the sun shining over the calm sea. The full motto on this left side reads “VI CONCITATÆ” (driven by force), and the right side says “CESSANTE VENTO CONQUIESCEMUS” (When the wind subsides, we shall rest). These two vignettes portray two sides to the war with England: that the colonies were forced into it, and they would reunite after the conflict passed.
