Used as a form of paper currency in the United States from 1863-1933, US Gold Certificates gave their holder ownership of actual gold coins at the rate of $20.67 per troy ounce. In 1933, the US government ended the practice of redeeming these notes for gold and withdrew them from circulation. In fact, it was illegal to even own any until 1964. Presently, currency notes are highly desirable among collectors, with the appeal increasing depending on their age, condition, and rarity.
The obverse of the note features a portrait of our first President, George Washington. The number 20 appears above Washington’s head, as well as in each of the four corners. Text: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “TWENTY DOLLARS”, and “IN GOLD COIN”.
The reverse of the note catches the eye with its bright-orange coloring. In the center, the US Seal appears between the words “TWENTY DOLLARS”. The word “TWENTY” is shown in both bottom corners, while the number “20” appears in the top two corners. Text: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “GOLD CERTIFICATE”.
