Banknotes, especially silver certificates, are some of the original currency bills of the United States. These banknotes were backed by silver that was located in the US Treasury. They were created in response to the official installment of the gold standard in 1878 through the adoption of the Fourth Coinage Act. This act centralized the government as the only legal body to create coinage and legal currency. The government took action in this way to control the influx of silver circulating in the country after the discovery of the massive Comstock Lode. As a silver certificate, this US banknote displays a seal and its serial number in blue. This blue text is crucial because it marks this banknote as a genuine silver certificate. Silver certificates also indicate their denomination value in silver, “payable to the bearer on demand.” Although these are obsolete and you cannot go to a bank to collect the silver they once represented, these banknotes are still legal tender and can be accepted as a form of currency.
The obverse features the portrait of first US President George Washington, along with the denomination. The blue Treasury seal on the obverse identifies it as a Silver Certificate.
The reverse displays the denomination and the Eye of Providence on the left side, which represents strength and duration. The US Seal is featured on the right side of the bill.
