1917 Mexico 20 Pesos Gold Coin

This beautifully designed, first year of release, 1917 gold Mexican 20 Pesos Gold coin is composed of .4823 oz. of .900 pure gold. This is a great piece for coin or bullion collectors, with a mintage of 852,000 as part of the 20 Pesos series that was minted from 1917-1921 and 1959.

The 20 pesos gold coin features on its obverse the "Eagle Bowl", which is more widely known as the Aztec calendar or Sun Stone, which was calendar system that was used by the Aztecs as well as other Pre-Columbian peoples of central Mexico, and one that has both mythological and astronomical significance. This calendar is one of the most recognizable symbols of Mexico. Surrounding the calendar are the words "VIENTE  PESOS'' (Twenty Pesos) and below that "15 Gr. ORO PURO" (15 grams pure gold).

The reverse design features a golden eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. The 20 Pesos gold coin has the modern version of the coat of arms, with the eagle facing sideways. Above the Eagle are the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" (United Mexican States), and the year (1917) is found to the right of the eagle.

The lettered edge reads "INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD" which translated to Independence and Freedom.
