1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent BU Red/Brown
Discover an important first-year issue of one of America’s most enduring coin series with the 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent BU Red/Brown. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this historic cent comes from the original production of Lincoln Cents bearing designer Victor David Brenner’s V.D.B. initials prominently on the reverse. Offered in Brilliant Uncirculated Red/Brown condition, the coin displays an appealing blend of original reddish copper color and naturally developed brown tones.
The 1909 VDB Cent was struck from the classic bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighs 3.11 grams, and has a plain edge. Philadelphia produced 27,995,000 examples before the prominent VDB initials were removed from the design.
The Lincoln Cent was introduced in 1909, replacing the Indian Head Cent and beginning a series that would become one of the most familiar in American coinage. The new design commemorated the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and was created by sculptor and medalist Victor David Brenner.
The first Lincoln Cents were released to the public in August 1909. Their introduction represented a significant departure from previous circulating U.S. coinage, placing a recognizable historical American figure at the center of a regular-issue coin design.
