1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent BU Red
Begin at the very start of one of America’s longest-running coin series with the 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent BU Red. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the inaugural year of the Lincoln Cent, this historic issue features designer Victor David Brenner’s V.D.B. initials prominently along the bottom of the reverse. Offered in Brilliant Uncirculated Red condition, the coin retains the desirable reddish copper coloration associated with well-preserved, uncirculated Lincoln Cents.
Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, the 1909 VDB weighs 3.11 grams and represents an important transitional moment in U.S. coinage, when the familiar Indian Head Cent gave way to the new Lincoln design.
The Lincoln Cent debuted in 1909 to commemorate the centennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. President Theodore Roosevelt had taken an interest in improving the artistic quality of American coinage and became familiar with sculptor and medalist Victor David Brenner, whose earlier Lincoln portrait ultimately provided the basis for the new cent.
