Struck by the United States Mint, this historic American penny weighs 3.11 grams and is composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. As a first-year issue of the famous Lincoln Wheat cent series, the 1909 penny represents an important turning point in American coinage. Collectors seeking classic U.S. coins can add this 1909 Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent AU to their collection today.

The Lincoln cent was introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Designed by sculptor Victor David Brenner, the coin represented a significant departure from earlier U.S. coin designs. Lincoln became the first historical individual to appear on a regular-issue circulating United States coin, replacing the Indian Head cent that had been produced since 1859.

Brenner’s design features a right-facing portrait of Lincoln on the obverse and two wheat ears on the reverse, which led collectors to commonly refer to the series as the “Wheat Penny” or “Wheat Cent.” The Wheat reverse remained in use from 1909 through 1958 before being replaced by the Lincoln Memorial design in 1959.

The first Lincoln cents produced in 1909 originally displayed Brenner’s initials, “V.D.B.,” prominently near the bottom of the reverse. After objections arose over the size and placement of the initials, they were removed during the first year of production. Consequently, both VDB and non-VDB Lincoln cents were issued in 1909. This coin represents the non-VDB 1909 issue, making it a distinct first-year variety within the Lincoln Wheat cent series.
