1868-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin NGC AU 53
The 1868-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin NGC AU 53 is a historic and valuable coin from the United States Mint. This particular coin is graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as AU 53, which stands for About Uncirculated 53. The coin is made of 90% gold and 10% copper, with a weight of 0.9675 troy oz.
The obverse of the coin features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word "Liberty," and surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The date "1868" is located below the image of Liberty.
The reverse of the coin displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Above the eagle's head is the motto "In God We Trust," and the denomination "Twenty Dollars" is inscribed below the eagle. The mintmark "S" for the San Francisco Mint is located just above the denomination.
This coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1868, which was one of the only three mints authorized to produce gold coins at that time. The coin's mintage was relatively low at 837,500, making it a scarce coin today, especially in higher grades.
