The Liberty Head Double Eagle, also known as the Coronet Double Eagle, was America’s first $20 gold coin and one of the most important denominations in U.S. numismatic history. Authorized in 1849 during the California Gold Rush and first issued for circulation in 1850, it was designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. Produced for nearly 60 years until 1907, the series spanned major chapters of American growth — from the Gold Rush and Civil War through Reconstruction and the Gilded Age. These large, heavy gold coins became the backbone of domestic and international commerce and remain highly prized for both their historical significance and substantial gold content.
