The discovery of gold deposits in Coloma, California in January 1848 started the movement known as the California Gold Rush. Approximately 300,000 travelers came to California in search of wealth and success until 1855, when the gold rush came to an end. In 1857, a ship called SS Central America (also referred to as “Ship of Gold”) unfortunately sank in a fierce hurricane, taking 425 passengers as well as 30,000 pounds of gold down with it. In 1988, a remotely operated vehicle was sent down to the wreckage, which led to the recovery of large amounts of gold and other precious artifacts. This specific 2.1 gram gold nugget was among the gold recovered from the sunken S.S. Central America steamboat.
