The obverse features a left sided portrait of Lady Liberty, as she wears a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY" and with her hair in loose curls. Encircling the rim are 13 stars along with the year of mintage.

The reverse side shows the American bald eagle with a patriotic shield on its chest, wings spread open for flight. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the denomination.
