This beautiful 40 Franc French coin was graded by NGC as XF 45: Legends and devices are clear and sharp, with slight wear on the high points, and great eye appeal.
For twelve years, Napolean Bonaparte's image was stamped onto French 40 Francs gold coins between 1802 and 1813 . After Napoleon's defeat, subsequent governments pulled his gold coins out of circulation and melted them. Therefore, they are hard to find nowadays.
Napoleon Bonaparte often regarded as one of the worlds greatest military minds, and a great politician, came into power February 1800. Napoleon created many reforms that improved France and in 1802 he was elected consul for life, two days later he was crowned emperor of France. Napoleons military success also led to his downfall. Beginning in 1810 France suffered back to back losses in battle. With international pressure mounting and his government lacking the resources to fight back against his enemies, Napoleon surrendered to allied forces on March 30, 1814. He went into exile on the island of Elba. He escaped the island and quickly made his way to Paris, where he triumphantly returned to power. Napoleon Quickly returned to battle and suffered a loss from the British after he was sent to the remote island of St. Helena, where he lived out the rest of his life. This coin commemorates Napoleon Bonaparte one of the greatest military minds in history.
The obverse portrays Napoleon Bonapart during his reign as emperor. The reverse portrays the denomination (40 Francs) within a wreath with the date below (1811). To the left of the date is a rooster while to the right is the mint mark (A). Around the rim of the coin towards the top is engraved with "EMPIRE FRANCAIS"
