Introduction:
The Franklin Half Dollars were released to honor the Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin is the first non-presidential person to be honored on a regular U.S. coin issue. Detailed Information:
Benjamin Franklin is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America and the most famous of them. He is a renowned polymath, who is well-versed in various fields. His achievements and contributions do not limit itself to one field but are widespread into different fields like science, social, politics, writing, printing, civil activity and much more. He was one of the most influential people in America.
Mint Director, Nellie Tayloe Ross had been a great admirer of Benjamin Franklin, and she wished to issue a coin in honor of him. Since it had been more than 25 years since the Walking Liberty Half Dollar had been issued, as per the 1890 Act, the Mint could go ahead and release a new coin without congressional action.
Ross had asked the Mint’s chief engraver John R. Sinnock to prepare a design for the Franklin Half Dollar as she had seen a 1933 medal designed by Sinnock featuring Benjamin Franklin. Unfortunately, Sinnock died before he could finish the design. His successor at the Mint, Gilroy Roberts took over the responsibility of completing the design.
The design on the obverse featured a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, and the reverse featured the cracked Liberty Bell to the right of which lies a very small image of an American Bald Eagle. As per law, any coin higher than a dime must sport the eagle on the reverse.
This design was submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts for the advisory opinion. The Commission had issues with the cracked Liberty bell design, which the Commission felt could become a subject of jokes and ridicule. However, the advice was rejected by the Treasury, and the Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder approved the design.
This coin is the first of its kind featuring non-presidential person on U.S. Coinage. It is historically significant and is a popular coin.
