Werewolves have haunted our dreams and imaginations for centuries, and continue to terrify and excite horror fans across the globe to this day. While a variety of beliefs have sprung up surrounding this therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature, its roots can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology as well as ancient Greek literature and mythology. Werewolf sightings were first reported in New France: In July 1767, an article in the Gazette de Québec cautioned the public to be on the look-out for a loup-garou (also called lycanthrope or werewolf) disguised as a beggar. In the province of Quebec, the loups-garous is still among the most famous legends of all. How a person transforms into a loup-garou changes depending on the storyteller, but the loup-garou isn’t limited to Quebec. It is believed that Acadians brought the myth with them when they re-settled in Louisiana, where the Cajun Rougarou prowls the bayous and frightens misbehaving children.
Werewolves of all backgrounds and monikers have appeared in literature for centuries, and more recently in film and television. Some famous werewolves in film include Scott Howard (Teen Wolf), David Kessler (An American Werewolf in London), and Remus Lupin (Harry Potter), while well-known TV werewolves include Daniel "Oz" Osbourne (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Scott McCall (Teen Wolf), and Niklaus "Klaus" Mikaelson (The Vampire Diaries).
The obverse depicts the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by inscriptions.
The reverse features a werewolf design by artist Gerald Gloade: A ferocious werewolf crouches low in front of a dark forest, reaching its claw out towards the viewer while it lets out a blood-curdling howl. The full moon can be seen in the background, along with a micro-engraved maple leaf with the number “21”. The coin’s border displays radial lines and various inscriptions.
