In 2017, the SA Mint produced the first-ever Silver Krugerrands to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand's first release. Silver Krugerrands are minted in 1 oz denominations, while Gold Krugerrands are available in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz versions. 

The obverse of the coin shows the portrait of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz. As president of the SA Republic from 1883 to 1900, Kruger played an important role in restoring independence to the South African Republic. This dream finally became a reality in 1884, when Great Britain officially recognized the SA Republic as an independent state. Surrounding Paul Kruger’s profile on the obverse are the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.

On the coin’s reverse, a springbok antelope jumps across a grassy terrain. As the National Animal of South Africa, the majestic antelope appears on the reverse of both the silver and gold Krugerrands. Inscriptions include “ KRUGERRAND” “2022”, as well as the purity and weight of the coin.
