The American Eagle coins began in 1986, and it was so named for its famous reverse design. So, the 1986-early 2021 US Mint gold and silver American Eagle coins are now a completed series. However, the name still befits this lovely Type 2 American Silver Eagle because the reverse continues to spotlight the bald eagle. For the 35th anniversary, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This major change arose because, according to law, the Treasury can only change the design of a coin once within a certain timespan. Therefore, the US Mint meticulously created this new reverse for 2021, along with the additional new reeded edge. This security design appears as a “gap” variation in the coin’s edge. Additionally, the obverse has been further modified to more closely resemble the original Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design used on the 1916-1947 silver half dollar. Please note, the platinum and Palladium American Eagle will not be changed at this time.

The obverse maintains the Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design with restored elements including Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. In the picture, Lady Liberty heads toward the setting sun. She carries oak and laurel branches in her left arm and outstretches her right arm to the rising sun. The American flag is draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design of the Type 2 Silver Eagle coin bears a flying American bald eagle with an oak branch secure in its talons. Inscriptions border the eagle including the country, weight, purity, denomination, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
