The Type 2 Silver Eagle coin, however, will still contain 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The obverse of Type 2 Silver Eagle coin bears the “Walking Liberty” illustration originally featured on the 1916-1947 silver half-dollar. Design elements from this issue have been restored such as Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, and minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. Lady Liberty marches towards the setting sun while carrying oak and laurel branches. The American flag is draped over her shoulders and her dress billows gently in the wind.

The new reverse design of the Type 2 American Silver Eagles shows the American bald eagle in flight with an oak branch in its talons. Inscriptions that surround the eagle note the country, weight, purity, denomination, and US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
