Bullion Holiday Deals: Veterans Day

Veterans Day Bullion

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States honoring veterans of the United States Armed Forces. It is celebrated every year on November 11th. Originally named Armistice Day, it coincides with the official end of hostilities in the First World War, which ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The United States renamed the holiday to Veterans Day in 1954 at the urging of major US veteran groups, though Armistice Day is still celebrated on the same day throughout the world.

The holiday originally began in 1919, on the one year anniversary of the end of the First World War. Then president Woodrow Wilson marked this occasion with the message “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.”

The holiday was then expanded to Veterans Day in 1954 when US representative Ed Rees pushed a bill to rename the holiday through Congress, after which President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. This was after significant pressure from World War II veterans like Raymond Weeks, who wished to honor all veterans, as opposed to World War I veterans only. In 1947, Weeks began leading Veterans Day celebrations annually in Alabama, even before the holiday was officially renamed, and continued to do so until his death in 1985.

Because Veterans Day is a federal holiday, many workers and students have it off. This includes all workers in non-essential federal government offices, as well as all mail delivery workers. Veterans Day also typically falls in the week immediately following election day, and there is significant political pressure to combine the holidays so that Americans can have election day off to increase voter turnout.

Bullion Exchanges invites you to celebrate the veterans and military service members in your life with one of our many patriotic products. We currently carry coins commemorating the WWII Pacific theater, like our Guam War commemorative coins, as well as the European theater, such as our D-Day coins. We also offer silver commemorative medals of honor, which pay respects to soldiers who have distinguished themselves through acts of valor.

The Asahi True Patriot Round is new to our catalog this year, which celebrates soldiers by using American mined metal and being minted in an American facility. Outside of coins, we also sell silver bullets. In addition, our coins honoring famous American patriots, such as George Washington, John F. Kennedy, Benjamin Franklin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Teddy Roosevelt help pay homage to the American legacy that our veterans fight to defend.
