The Gold Sovereign was first chartered by Henry VII in 1489. Its original design showed the King in full coronation regalia and on the reverse, the Tudor Rose, a reference to the union between the houses of Lancaster and York. It was last minted in 1604. The name was then revived with the Great Recoinage of 1816 and began minting in 1817. Until 1932 it was a fully circulating coin within Britain's gold-standard currency. Today it is used as a bullion currency.
The Victoria Young Head Shield Reverse coin was issued from 1838 to 1873, with the exception of only two years: 1840 and 1867. It depicts the young head of Queen Victoria on the obverse with the Shield and coat of arms on the back.
The Victoria Young Head Dragon coin was issued from 1871-1887 with the same obverse as the previous version, but with the now-iconic image of St. George slaying the Dragon on the obverse.
The Jubilee Head coin was produced from 1887 to 1893 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. As part of the celebrations, the Royal Mint revived Benedetto Pistrucci's earlier design of St. George slaying the Dragon, one of the most iconic images on British coinage.
The Veiled Head coin, produced from 1893 to 1901, features the portrait of a mature Victoria, once again with St. George and the Dragon on the reverse.
The Edward VII coin signaled the end of Queen Victoria's reign and the beginning of King Edward's rule. Minted from 1902-1910, the coin features a portrait of the King on the obverse and St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse.
The George V coin, minted from 1911-1932, shows on its obverse King George V, who became King in 1910 after the death of his father, King Edward VII. The reverse once again depicts St. George slaying the dragon.
