About the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint, Australia's oldest operating mint, was established in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint following the discovery of vast gold deposits in Western Australia. Initially tasked with producing gold sovereigns for Great Britain, the Perth Mint played a key role in the British Empire’s currency supply until 1931. After gaining independence from British ownership in 1970, the mint shifted focus to producing Australia’s official currency, refining precious metals, and minting blanks for other governments and financial institutions worldwide. Today, the Perth Mint is recognized by several global trading entities, including the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), TOCOM, DMCC, and COMEX. Its extensive range of bullion products includes gold and silver bars, as well as the highly sought-after Lunar Series and Kangaroo coins.

The History of the Perth Mint

Founded in 1899, just before Australia became a federation in 1901, the Perth Mint was established to streamline the refining process of local gold deposits, eliminating the need to ship gold to Great Britain for processing. Along with its sister branches in Melbourne and Sydney, the Perth Mint provided Australia with locally minted currency. In 1970, the mint officially came under the control of the Australian government, and by 1987, it was managed by the Gold Corporation, an entity owned by the government of Western Australia. The Perth Mint has a long history of innovation, including producing the world’s purest gold in 1957—a 13-troy-ounce plate of .999999 fine gold.
